News - Polar Preet does it again !
So if you didn’t know Derby’s own Preet Chandi, aka Polar Preet has just completed what is believed to be the quickest solo unsupported expedition to the south pole in Antarctica. Preet’s attempt which is yet to be verified by the Guinness Book of World Records was her third expedition to Antarctica in the last 3 years. This time it was all about speed following her previous world record of the longest solo, unsupported expedition in 2022/2023. Preet covered 1130km in 31 days, 13 hours and 19 minutes from Hercules Inlet to the South Pole. Solo and unsupported simply means that Preet must be completely unsupported and self sufficient throughout her journey, taking all supplies with her and leaving nothing behind. This was yet another amazing feat of endurance and resilience from this remarkable lady.
We’ve had the honour of providing strength and conditioning support to Preet over the last few years in preparation for these attempts. Each expedition posed it’s own unique challenge which had to be accommodated in Preet’s training plan. Ultimately the priority was making sure that Preet maximised her availability and readiness to train for her events. That is, the underlying goal was always to ensure that a) Preet was robust enough to cope with the physical demands of a busy training schedule which mainly involved a huge amount of tyre dragging and roller skiing. and b) training the physical capacities required for these type of events. A needs analysis of the event and the individual highlights the necessary areas to work on in the training programme. For example what are the energy systems required for such an event?, what are the biomechanics of the movement (skiing)?, are there any past injuries or weaknesses that Preet needs to be aware of? etc etc. These considerations and any physiological / strength testing then ultimately shape the programme and provide the framework for helping Preet towards her goal.
Ultimately Preet demonstrated huge resilience and determination on her expedition, overcoming numerous challenges and set backs. However, the expedition was largely built on many hours, days, weeks and months of meticulous preparation and consistent hard work. Preet has demonstrated what most high achieving athletes (novice and amateur) do well, that is consistently turning up. Usually when they’re tired, or its cold outside or motivation is waning. Whatever your goal this year is keep putting the work in and turning up, week in, week out. Everything else is secondary. Good luck !!
